Pukka teams up with Do Nation to support the 'Tea time' pledge

Give back to the community by pledging with Do Nation to boil only the water that you need in your kettle to make your Pukka cuppa

Did you know?

32 million litres of water are boiled every day in the UK only to go cold again. That’s a lot of time waiting for a kettle to boil when you could be using that time for you.

Pukka has teamed up with Do Nation, a social enterprise inspiring people to make pledges towards more sustainable ways of living. Make the ‘Tea time’ pledge and commit to only boiling the water you need in your kettle for two months and see how many extra moments of calm you can create.

What’s more, our friends at Do Nation have worked out that, collectively, UK tea drinkers could save nearly £1million a day in electricity savings by only boiling what’s needed.  And get this - your tea will taste even better too!

Why is the ‘Tea time’ pledge so important to Pukka?

Our health and our planet’s health are closely linked. Too much carbon being released into the air is altering our climate and making our beautiful planet ‘sick’ – jeopardising all our futures.  We all need to take urgent action.

Pukka became a certified carbon neutral company back in 2015. To achieve this, we use Good Energy (a green energy provider) in our office and warehouse, and reduce and offset the carbon from things like our commuting, freight and business travel with But that’s a drop in the carbon ‘ocean’.  There’s more we can do and we need your help.

Did you know for example, that the biggest chunk of a cup of herbal tea’s carbon footprint comes not from its sourcing, shipping, or packaging – but from people boiling water to brew it? And with two-thirds of us boiling far more water than we need each time we make a cuppa, the quickest way to reduce this is by encouraging a simple behaviour change – just boiling what we need.

Over a million people enjoy a Pukka cuppa every day, so we wanted to find a fun way to encourage everyone not to over boil.  Which is why we’ve teamed up with Do Nation’s tea time pledge.  Sign up and they’ll support you for two months to change your habits with tips and cheerleading all the way.

As a big Pukka thank you for joining our movement for a happier, healthier planet, we will give back to the Soil Association’s Food for Life programme when reaching the first 3,000 pledges.

Food for Life teaches children about nature and how to grow and eat healthy food. As a direct result of your pledges, our donation will supply ‘grow at home herbs kits’ for children to apply their newly acquired knowledge at home.

So what’s not to love? More time for you, a healthier planet and herbs for kids.

Let’s get pledging.

NEED TO WORK OUT IF WE WANT THIS/WHERE IT WILL SIT. Potentially don’t upload initially: You can learn more about this unique partnership in Hermione’s guest blog below.

Hermione Taylor - Founder of Do Nation:

We are building a movement of people taking action towards a more sustainable future. We’ve developed an online pledge platform built on the best behavioural science, designed to help people form healthy habits for people and planet. When making a pledge, our users can choose from a menu of over 50 Do Actions. One of the most popular Do Actions is ‘Tea time’ – to boil less water in your kettle.

Collaboration is the key. When we’re all working towards the same bloomin’ huge goal, it makes total sense to unite our efforts. For us at Do Nation, as a tiny two-man band on a mission to help make sustainability mainstream, collaboration is absolutely critical. That’s why we’re so excited to announce a new partnership between Do Nation, Pukka Herbs and the Soil Association.

To incentivise people to record and share their pledges, Pukka are teaming up with the Soil Association to introduce a novel form of ‘match funding’ action: if 3,000 people pledge to do ‘Tea time’, Pukka will support the Soil Association’s Food for Life programme to get families gardening this summer. Pukka will help the Soil Association to create free guides, jam-packed full of hints and tips to help families discover their green fingers and enjoy growing herbs together, whether it’s in a garden, on a balcony or even a windowsill.

Through collaborations like this we all win: Pukka, Soil Association, Do Nation, our communities, and of course, the planet.
